Ekran Toronto Polish Film Festival is Back for its 13th Season The Festival will run from November 16 – 20, 2022

TORONTO (October 28, 2022) – Ekran Toronto Polish Film Festival returns for its 13th season, showcasing the best in contemporary Polish cinema with a lineup of short films, feature films and documentaries. One of this year’s feature films is Cannes Jury Prize winner and Oscar candidate EO, which tells the story of a donkey exploring modern Europe.


The five-day festival runs from November 16 – 20, 2022 at the Revue Cinema in Toronto, located at 400 Roncesvalles Avenue. All films are in Polish with English subtitles. Most screenings are preceded by one or two short films.

Tickets for Ekran Toronto Polish Film Festival are on sale now and can be purchased in advance online at ekran.ca.


Single tickets are $20.00 and a Festival Pass, which grants access to all screenings, is $120.00. Tickets purchases online are non-refundable and should be printed or displayed on a smartphone and presented at the entrance. Tickets can be purchased at the door, subject to availability. Seats are not numbered and are first come, first served. Doors open 15 minutes before each screening.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16

6:30 p.m.: Sukienka/Dress (short film) & Każdy wie lepiej/Everyone Knows Better (feature film)


Sukienka /Dress

Synopsis: A woman with limited hopes toils in a rundown motel in rural Poland, as a maid. Will the repeated visits of an interesting man, a truck driver, change the loneliness of her situation?


Każdy wie lepiej/Everyone Knows Better

Director: Michał Rogalski

Runtime: 94 minutes

Synopsis: Everyone Knows Better is a humorous and emotional comedy about a couple in love which become the target of their loved ones' intrigue. Family rearrangement is the perfect recipe for a brilliant comedy that will surprise everyone!

Synopsis: Nikodem serves his sentence under a new penitentiary programme involving work at the house of Maja and Łukasz who are surprised when Nikodem’s appeal is successful and he regains his freedom. Synopsis: A documentary about the biggest mystery and the greatest, unfulfilled dream of Polish cinema On the Silver Globe, which could have become one of the most groundbreaking sci-fi films ever made.

Synopsis: A touching story about life passing and friendship, observed from a cat’s perspective.


Sonata

Director: Bartosz Blaschke

Synopsis: Grzegorz was diagnosed as an autistic child, but later discovers that he isn’t autistic, but deaf. With the help of an auditory implant, Grzegorz discovers his dream of being a pianist.


9:30 p.m. – Anteros (short film), Forever (short film) & Krzysztof Krawczyk – Cale Moje Zycie/Krzysztof Krawczyk – All My Life (feature film)


Anteros

Director: Laura Mielczarek

Synopsis: Marek is visiting Anna’s and Krzysztof’s house by the lake and is arriving with his new girlfriend. It’s a chance for Anna to spend time with her beloved son, whom she hasn’t seen for a long time. However, the meeting will force Anna to face the painful truth about her family and herself.


Forever

Synopsis: A magical story based on a painting by the German painter Michael Sowa "The Stormy Weather". During a hot summer day, unusual phenomena take place in the apartment of a long-term married couple.


Krzysztof Krawczyk – Cale Moje Zycie/Krzysztof Krawczyk – All My Life

Directors: Michał Bandurski and Krystian Kuczkowski

Runtime: 100 minutes

Synopsis: A biographical documentary devoted to the icon of Polish popular music, Krzysztof Krawczyk, featuring unpublished archival materials.


FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18

Synopsis: Warsaw, 1968. Students are protesting the unlawful expulsion of their colleagues from the university and in defense of the "Dziady" (Forefathers' Day) poster. Hania and Janek are also among the protesting youth. Young and madly in love with each other, like in Shakespeare's drama Romeo and Juliet, in a country overwhelmed by rebellion, they fight for their affection.

Synopsis: A fox travels through the forest in search of food. When she reaches the edge of the forest, she comes across a lonely farm where she witnesses the stormy events involving a young woman expecting a baby.


Malagueña Salerosa

Director: Dora Paszuk

Runtime: 10 minutes

Synopsis: Things too big to be seen by standing too close Everything and nothing. Memory and reflection. Confidence and uncertainty. Or maybe... All in nothing. Remembrance in reflection. Certainty in uncertainty. Possible in the impossible


Maryla. My Kind of Love

Directors: Krystian Kuczkowski and Michał Bandurski

Runtime: 108 minutes

Synopsis: For over five decades now, singer Maryla Rodowicz has kept her fans on their toes. This documentary also features never-before-seen footage from the archives of Polish Television. The filmmakers followed the artists through months of rehearsals and performances and interviewed many of her friends, family, fellow musicians and collaborators.


SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19


12:30 p.m. – Funeralia (short film) & Magnezja (feature film)


Funeralia

Director: Bartlomiej Blaszczynski

Runtime: 15 minutes

Synopsis: K - the protagonist - wins a gravedigging competition though the organizers don’t believe she should’ve won and take what’s most important from K to teach him a lesson.


Magnezja

Director: Maciek Bochniak

Runtime: 119 minutes

Synopsis: A western, inspired by the likes of Tarantino and Leone, and set in the 1920s in the borderland between Poland and the USSR, where twin brothers plan to rob a rival Mafia style family that’s run by two sisters.

Synopsis: An office clerk, aimlessly going through the motions of his work, happens upon a hidden passport, leading him on a secret investigation.


The Balcony Movie

Director: Paweł Łoziński

Runtime: 100 minutes

Synopsis: Director Paweł Łoziński is watching people from his balcony as they are passing by, he accosts them, asks questions, talks about how they deal with life. Every story is unique, and life always surpasses imagination.


6:30 p.m. – Unburial (short film), Aspects (short film) & EO (feature film)


Unburial

Director: Artur Wyrzykowski

Runtime: 22 minutes

Synopsis: Unable to cope with a breakup, Berka lives in a fantasy that her beloved Olga will return to her. When Berka's dad urges her to come home for an unburial, she has to confront him, a City Hall expert and his activation programme for Millennials, as well as her ex.

Director: Connor Kujawinski

Runtime: 4 minutes

Synopsis: Axel fights a moving aspect ratio as Leigh burns any memory of Axel’s existence.


EO

Director: Jerzy Skolimowski

Runtime: 86 minutes

Synopsis: This film follows a donkey who explores modern Europe. He encounters good and bad people and experiences moments of joy and pain.


SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 20


1:00 p.m. – Dismay (short film), Backstage (short film) & Pierogi Stories with Stuffing (feature film)


Dismay

Director: Joanna Helena Szymańska

Runtime: 27 minutes

Synopsis: A magical and brutal story set in a Masurian village about the extraordinary bond between a father and an eight-year-old daughter and about the dire consequences of an attempt to take a hypersensitive girl away from an alcohol-addicted musician.


Backstage

Director: Ada Smyk

Runtime: 10 minutes

Synopsis: Craftspeople of the Polish National Opera in Warsaw are preparing costumes and set design for the upcoming premiere of one of the most important shows of the season. The film sheds light on the invisible work of dozens of people, usually overshadowed by the artists performing on stage.


Pierogi Stories with Stuffing

Director: Marcin Wokan

Runtime: 97 minutes

Synopsis: This documentary film offers short glances into four different worlds. he characters of the film will let you into their lives for a moment, but have left the endings for themselves. Stuffed stories are a search for the unusual in the ordinary.


4:00 p.m. – Solar Voyage (short film), Synthol (short film) & Illusion (feature film)


Solar Voyage

Synopsis: Discover the true story of the disappearance and return of the Polish Icarus, Mirek Lech. A tale of a great mind, a burning obsession, raging elements, the struggle with schizophrenia, and the difficulties of being accepted by the family and the society.


Synthol

Director: Piotr Trojan

Runtime: 24 minutes

Synopsis: Eryk is a 30-year-old vlogger documenting his preparations for the bodybuilding debut, with the help of his overprotective mother.


Illusion

Director: Marta Minorowicz

Runtime: 90 minutes

Synopsis: Many months after her disappearance, the mother of a missing daughter starts her own increasingly irrational investigation.


7:00 p.m. – Black Sheep (feature film) & festival awards

Black Sheep

Director: Aleksander Pietrzak

Runtime: 107 minutes

Synopsis: A warm and moving comedy-drama about bonds that are impossible to break. The film offers humorous answers to many important questions regarding family, relations and growing up.
